Lucy endured a long drive in a van with multiple other dogs from West Virginia to Rhode Island. The adoption event was at a local pet store. Lucy was advertised as a German Shepherd puppy, healthy and good with other dogs. I was excited to adopt a bigger dog for my other dog Brody to run around with.

When we told the adoption coordinator that Lucy was the dog we wanted to adopt, she brought her out and Lucy had her tail tucked and she was scared to death with all the commotion in the store. Lucy was not a German Shepherd mix, had ticks on her, and emaciated. You could feel every bone. I’ve never felt a dog's bones like that before, it was heartbreaking.
The first week was one of the worst weeks. Lucy went to the bathroom in the house nonstop, she did not like Brody, she hated my neighbor dogs (who we shared a fence with), she had no food or toy interest, jumped the fence a few times and just didn't know how to be a dog. Lucy was completely shut down. I've never had a dog like her before. I felt in another home she would 100% be brought back to a shelter or worse.

My boyfriend and I were determined to help bring her to wellness. Every dog is different but Lucy required a long time to decompress. We gave her the time she needed and allowed her to feel safe. Once we were able to get Lucy healthy her training process started. With training she has become the most special dog. She is now my emotional support dog and is quite possibly one of the best dogs in the world.
